Are you a morning person?
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve grown to appreciate mornings more and more. Dare I say, I even like them now.
That hasn’t always been the case, though. For most of my life I’ve wished days would start at noon.
But now? I pop out of bed and welcome each new day. I mean, some of the reason for that is the fact that my kids apparently think there’s some kind of race to get up between them and the sun. Some of it is that mornings bring coffee, and some of it is that breakfast is my favorite meal of the day.
I LOVE bagel sandwiches.
Ask my kids. In fact, my daughter once said the only thing interesting about me was that I eat bagel sandwiches every morning. 😂
She must have forgotten about my amazing sense of humor! Oh, well…she’ll learn!
I think the real reason I like mornings now is that I’ve realized mornings are like God’s reset button.
You see, there are many days when I get things wrong…as a husband, a father, a friend…and I need a do over. I need a chance to make things better, to do it right, and to reconcile…
My achilles heel is saying things I regret. I mean, if saying things you wish you hadn’t is a spiritual gift, then that’s one of mine!
I tend to beat myself up for days, but thankfully, mornings bring a new start…
When I was younger I never really understood or appreciated God’s love and grace. But, the older I get the more keenly aware I am that…without Him…I’m a broken, hopeless mess. With Him, I am whole.
So, I crave His mercy and grace. I want to walk in it daily.
Now, I confess…I don’t spend a ton of time in the Bible reading through the book of Lamentations, but there are a couple of verses from chapter 3 I want to share with you. (22-23) Maybe you’ve read them before.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
His mercies are new each morning.
What a great thing to remember!
Each day is brand new. This day has never happened before!
And that means each day is an opportunity to experience His love and grace all over again. That means we get a chance at a do-over.
You see, when we forget God’s mercies are fresh every morning we tend to fall into the trap of guilt and shame.
And guilt and shame make you want to crawl back in the bed and hide. Grace makes you want to run out the front door in hopes of doing better the next time.
I promise you God doesn’t want you to crawl into bed and hide. He has too many great things planned for you!
We don’t have to carry the weight of yesterday with us.
Today is new.
Are you holding on to baggage from yesterday? Last week? Last year?
Take advantage of God’s reset button.
