Let every heart prepare him room…

Let every heart prepare him room.

Let every heart prepare him room...

That line of Joy to the World has been stuck in my head for several days now.

Let every heart prepare him room.

I keep wondering if I’m preparing room for him in my own heart. Am I giving him room to move and work and be a part of my life…to hold the spot that He so rightfully deserves?

I wish I could say that I always do, but truthfully, I can’t. Instead I often fill my heart with stress and worry and to-do lists…frustration and selfish thoughts. Or activities.

In fact, whenever I have a spare moment, I try to fill it with something.

The world tells us to go, go, go…And it’s so hard to fight that temptation!

It’s funny. Sometimes I don’t make time for God in my life, and then I wonder where He is! Can you relate? The truth is He’s there all along, I just don’t “prepare him room.”

My cup runneth over…with activities!

Even though most of us would confess to being busy already, we keep filling our schedules with stuff and more stuff and more stuff.

And so we feel rundown and depleted…and the one thing we need more than anything else is absent from our lives.

I think about how that affects my kids. You see, if they don’t see me making room for Jesus in my life, then they won’t make room for him either.

Despite what I may say, they’ll learn that it’s more important to focus on stress and worry and chores and all the busyness that life can bring.

But, that isn’t my intent at all.

You know, I’m reminded of the words Jesus spoke at the beginning of the book of John, chapter four:

“In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”

I mean, Jesus…the Messiah…Emmanuel has prepared a place for you and me. He has made room for you and for me!

Yet, I don’t always make room for him. And I wonder how different my life would be if I did.

I wonder how it would silence all of the chaos and the noise that life brings.

So, I’m trying to get better.

This month, in particular, at my house we’re doing an Advent study. The cool thing about this reading is that it isn’t “just” the Christmas story. It takes us from Genesis all the way through. For the second year in a row, it’s reminded me that the Christmas story, the story of Jesus’s birth, is written on every single page of the Bible.

It helps us to take a few moments and slow down and prepare him room.

If you’re interested, you can find it here: https://advent.austinstone.org (There’s a family version and coloring sheets that go with each days’ reading.)

My hope is that you and I always remember to make room for him…not just during the Christmas season, but all year long.

Jesus is ready and willing to be in our lives. We just have to give him the space.

Joy to the world! The Lord is come!
Let earth receive her king.
Let every heart prepare him room…

Merry Christmas!

Stephen
