I have a common name. In fact, pretty much everywhere I go there is someone else who has the same name as I do, either first, last, or both. Restaurants, doctor’s offices…picking up a birthday cake…anywhere.
Not that I’m complaining. I like my name…for lots of reasons. I mean, people are constantly trying to keep up with the Joneses, so we must have it going on! No one ever asks me how to spell Jones. Those $5 beach shops always have sand dollars with my name on them. The list goes on and on!
But, having a common name does have some drawbacks.
For example, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten the wrong order at a restaurant because of it. I’ve even made up a name before to avoid confusion! Oh, and dining in…
“Jones, party of 4!”
How many people can lay claim to that table?!
Not too long ago debt collectors starting calling me five or six times per day. They were looking for Stephen Jones. I mean, who isn’t? But, I’m not the one they needed! It finally got so bad that one day my wife looked at me and said, “Is there something you need to tell me?”
But, do you know what? No matter how many people I share a name with, there is only one me. God made me special, unique…he intentionally created me, and only me, exactly the way I am.
That’s pretty cool!
I try to remember that when I feel like just another Stephen Jones…when I feel like just a contestant in the rat race…when the world seems so big and I feel so small. I try to remember that when everyone around me seems to have forgotten who I am, or better yet, everyone knows I’m there, but only sees me as a means to an end. I try to remember that when my mistakes seem to be mounting up and I feel like a big goofball.
Do you ever feel this way? Do you ever feel anything but special or unique?
The good news is that whether your name is Joe Somebody or What’s-His-Name…no matter how small you may feel, no matter how unimportant, unnoticeable or irrelevant you think you are, you are anything but.
You are not just a face in the crowd.
God knows you. He loves you. He made you. You are His masterpiece. He created you for a purpose. His purpose.
Don’t forget that. Always remember who you are! And, maybe take a little time today to remind someone else in your life just how special they really are too.
